Maths Problem Sums 8 July 09

1. Jamie and Stella shared $640 between themselves. When their father gave them
another $100 each, Stella had 32% less money than Jamie.
(a) how much money had Stella in the end? (3m)
(b) What was the ratio of Stella's money to Jamie's money at first? (2m)

2. Mrs Tan bought 20 books and pens for $118.
One week later, she sold 4 pens. Then she had the same number of pens and books left. Each book cost $1.00 more than each pen. How much did he pay for the books? (5m)

3. Alan, Ben and Colin bought a present for their father. The ratio of the amount paid by Alan to the total amount paid by Ben and Colin is 1: 3. The amount paid by Ben to the total amount paid by Alan and Colin is 1:5. If Colin paid $60 more than Ben did, how much did the present cost? (5m)

4. Tom had 1/2 the number of stickers Jerry had at first. After Jerry gave 12 of his stickers to Tom, Tom had 2/3 the number of stickers Jerry had. How many stickers did Tom have at first ? (5m)

5. There were 3600 adults at the Singapore Idol audition. However, only of the 5/6 men and 2/3 of the women present took part in the audition. Altogether, 2520 adults took part.
How many women and how many men took part in the audition? (5m)

6. A container weighs 0.466 kg when it is 2/3 filled with coffee powder. It weighs 0.406 kg when 1/4 of the coffee powder is removed. What is the mass of the container when it is empty? (4m)

7. Mr Toad fell into a well that is 335 cm deep on Sunday night. On Monday, he climbed 120 cm up the well but slipped 40 cm down by night time. On Tuesday, he climbed 110 cm up the well and slipped 40 cm again that night. Each day Mr Toad managed to climb 10 cm less than the day before but slipped the same distance by night. On which day did Mr Toad get out of the well ? (4m)
