Maths Problem Sums 9 July 09

1. Kelvin has some 10-cent, 20-cent and 50-cent coins. The number of 10-cent coins is 3 1/2 times the number of 20-cent coins. The number of 20-cent coins is twice the number of 50-cent coins. The value of the 10-cent coins is $16 more than the total value of the 50-cent coins. How many coins does Kelvin have altogether?

2. 40% of the workers in a factory are foreigners. The rest are Singaporeans. There are 72 male foreigners. The remaining 5/8 of the foreigners are female. If there are 216 female Singaporeans, what percentage of the total workers in the factory are male Singaporeans?

3. Raju travelled 7/12 of his journey at an average speed of 84 km/h for 2 hours. If he travelled at 48 km/h for the remaining journey, what is his average speed for the whole journey?

4. Ernie has between 20 to 70 guppies. When he tried to put the guppies equally into 5 glass bowls, the last bowl was short of 2 guppies. When he tried to put them equally into 7 glass bowls, the last bowl was short of 4 guppies. How many guppies did he have? (Write down the smallest possible number)

5. Mr Tan gave his wife 15% of his salary every month. When his salary was reduced by 30%, he gave her 30% less than the usual amount that he gave her each month. His wife then received $840. What was Mr Tan’s original salary?
