The Journey

“Tommy!”” Mrs. Granger hollered. The Grangers were about to leave for their trip off the mainland. Mr. Granger was warming up the car and Sally, Tommy’s older sister, was packing up. In a jiffy, they left for their destination.

Humming a little tune while driving, as always, Mr. Granger stepped on the accelerator and sped off to the highway.

“Dad, what is that?” Tommy pointed. As he was a little kid, he was curious of everything. Sally said with annoyance, “That is a plane, dummy!”

In the blink of an eye, the roads and lampposts died out and the roads disappeared, with the sun vanishing from their view.

Mr. Granger was so surprised he jammed the brakes. The force threw everyone in the car forward.

“Where…..where are we?” Mrs. Granger stuttered.

Sally gasped in astonishment, “Could it be that this is the twilight zone?”

“Waah! Waah!” Tommy started wailing uncontrollably, with mucus dripping down his nose and his eyes puffy and red.

Mr. Granger tried to comfort his family “Alright! Everybody, do not panic. It is okay, all is fine!”

Mr. Granger then continued to drive for a long distance, but simply was unable to get out of unknown arena. All they saw was an endless sea of deep blue. Even the handphones had no connection.

Out of frustration, Mr. Granger banged his head on the steering wheel. The old BMW let out a deafening horn.

All of a sudden, the deep blue background started to fade and the roads and lights were visible again. The Grangers squealed in delight and quickly drove off.

The Grangers reached their destination at 5pm. By then, they were starving.

Having wasted four hours trying to get out from the twilight zone, they unpacked their stuff and were glad that the futile struggle to return to reality was all over.

Maybe they really went into the twilight zone. This remains a mystery till today.
